A William Reid coffee can and a Chaffers coffee cup
circa 1756-62
the can of plain cylindrical shape with a thin, rolled handle, painted with a Chinaman standing by a table pointing to two vases of flowers, a barrel-shaped seat and a pine tree standing to one side, a red scroll motif painted on the handle, 6.5cm high (chips to inside rim), the rare Chaffers coffee cup with a plain strap handle, painted in bright colours with a group of Chinese figures, two ladies sit at a table with a small dog by their side, the reverse with a cock-fighting scene watched by a crouching man and a standing lady, a red and gold chain border inside, 6cm (some original kiln misfiring) (2)

Another from the Watney collection was sold in these rooms 1 November 2000, lot 1067. The Chaffers cup in Chinese style is possibly copied from Derby porcelain of similar date.
