A fine large Faenza drug jar
circa 1550
of globular shape with a deep neck ring, fully decorated in shades of green, yellow, blue, ochre and black with geometrical panels reserved with florets and foliate scroll designs, a large cartouche in the centre containing the bust of a soldier wearing a helmet and breastplate, his name 'Amono' inscribed on a ribbon, a larger scrolling ribbon below inscribed 'Lucia. pp.' in gothic script, 34.5cm high (some fine cracks, minor chips and wear to footrim)

  • Amono is a character from the Renaissance epic romance 'Orlando Furioso' by Ariosto. There is another Amono portrait (but in profile) on a drug jar dated 1550 in the Sprovieri collection, see Timothy Wilson, Italian Maiolica of the Renaissance (Milan 1996), no.69. A very similar bust of a soldier, entitled 'Rugero' is on an albarello in the Louvre, see Jeanne Giacomotti 'Catalogue des majoliques des Musées nationaux', no. 962. For three similar large vases, see Leonardo Colapinto, Paola Casati Migliorini and Romolo Magnani, Vasi da Farmacia de Rinascimento Italiano, nos. 98-100, pp. 218-223
