FINE COSWAY BINDING WITH 18 MINATURES BY C.B. CURRIE.
Wharton, Grace & Philip. The Wits and Beaux of Society. London: J.W. Jarvis & Son, 1890. Two volumes bound as one. Illustrated throughout. Royal 8vo (250 x 185 mm). Full steel gray levant morocco, covers with double gilt rule surrounding panel set with 9 portrait miniatures to each cover by C.B. Currie, the remaining field richly covered with gilt floral and foliate decoration, spine in six compartments, two of which are gilt-lettered, the remaining with single gilt flower surrounded by four gilt oak leaves, gilt dentelles, decorated white silk endpapers, t.e.g., by Riviere & Son, full brown levant morocco pull-off case. Bookplate removed from front flyleaf, covers with a few spots of rubbing, but fine, light shelf wear to case.

Laid in is a diagram of the miniatures which identifies the subjects. The upper cover includes Robert Fielding; William Congreve; Philip, Duke of Wharton; John Lord Hervey; Richard Brinsley Sheridan; Philip Dormer Stanhope, Earl of Chesterfield; Duc de Saint Simon; Beau Nash; and John, Earl of Rochester. The lower cover includes St. Evremond; Horace Walpole; George Bubb Doddington, Lord Melcombe; Beau Brummell; The Rev. Sydney Smith; Theodore E. Hook; Paul Scarron; George Selwyn; and Francois, Duc de la Rochefoucault.
