An Italian Baroque walnut and marquetry chest
First half 18th century
The rectangular top with canted inset front within projecting corners, having an ebonized molded edge, inlaid in bone, mother-of-pearl and specimen woods centrally depicting the Goddess Diana hovering over the sleeping young shepherd Endymion all within a scroll cartouche and flowerhead border the four spandrels showing, Leda and the Swan, Flora, Jupiter and Athena, the conforming case fitted with three long drawers, each decorated with a cherub with drawn bow and birds within a continuous floral and foliate border, flanked by canted angles headed by female terms, the sides decorated with urns of flowers within scroll cartouche and butterfly spandrels on molded ebonized plinth base and ebonized bun feet.
