SCOTCHER (GEORGE)
The Fly Fisher's Legacy, containing Accurate Descriptions of all the Principal Natural Flies, that Frequent the Water, first edition, hand-coloured engraved frontispiece, occasional light spotting, title with light foxing, nineteenth century half morocco, extremities rubbed [Westwood & Satchell, p.190], 12mo, Chepstow, M. Willett, [c.1819]

Footnotes

  • "This little angling book is regarded by the authorities as the rarest of its century. Apart from its rarity, it is one of the milestones in angling literature for its treatment of natural flies and their imitations. Absent from most of the angling collections. Mr Gee tells me he never had a copy" (pencil note on front free endpaper). There is no copy in the British Library, the Bodleian or the National Library of Wales.

Believed by Westwood & Satchell, Jack Heddon ("the first angling book devoted entirely to fly-fishing", Scotcher Notes, 1975), John Simpson, and many others to have preceded Bainbridge's Fly Fisher's Guide, published in 1816. Simpson and Heddon dated the book to around 1810, based upon the watermark. The frontispiece of Simpson's copy had only a section of the watermark, reading "SON | OL | 9", which he read as "[Firm's name &] Son | [Brist]ol | [180]9".

However, the present copy provides further dating information: more of the watermark is visible, and reads "& SON | TOL | 19". This is almost indisputable evidence that the work was in fact published in or after 1819. An important copy for its contributions to angling bibliographical history.
