Footnotes

  • One of the most authoritative atlases of the period before and during the American Revolutionary War, The American Atlas was first published in 1776. As official Geographer to George III, Thomas Jefferys published maps and charts for the Commissioners for Trade and Plantations during the French and Indian War (1754-1763), after which these materials were transfered to Robert Sayer. Sayer subsequently used Jefferys's work in several atlases, where they became the definitive reference for British possessions in North America.

Principal maps include "A New and Correct Map of North America, with the West India Islands...Corrected from the Original Materials of Governor Pownall", 520 x 1170mm; "A Map of South America"; "Course of the River Mississippi"; "An Accurate Map of North and South Carolina with their Indian Frontiers"; "A Map of Pennsylvania"; "The Provinces of New York, and New Jersey; with part of Pennsylvania, and the Province of Quebec"; "An Exact Chart of the River St. Laurence"; and "Chart Containing the Coasts of California, New Albion, and Russian discoveries to the North, with the peninsula of Kamtschatka, in Asia".

"Its timely publication, on the eve of the American Revolution, assured a good audience, and as a major cartographic reference work it was, very likely, consulted by American, English, and French civilian administrators and military officers during the Revolution" (Ristow, Introduction to the facsimile edition).
