Footnotes

  • Wazir Ali Khan was purchased from his mother shortly after birth and then presented to the reigning Nawab as his son by a palace concubine. He was subsequently repudiated by his 'father', but then proclaimed by his 'father's' widow and crowned Nawab.

He reigned as Nawab from 1797 to 1798 when he was deposed by the British and sent to Benares as an 'open prisoner'. On 14th January 1799 he murdered the British resident in Benares, Mr. Cherry following an acrimonious meeting and was then confined in Vellore Fort near Madras, where he remained until his death.
