The Matterhorn signed 'E.J. Compton' l.r. bodycolour 34.5 x 24 cm. (13 1/2 x 9 1/2 in.)
LITERATURE: A version of this work is illustrated in Siegfried Wichmann, Edward Theodore Compton, Maler und Alpinisten, Stuttgart, 1999, p.139.
Edward Theodore Compton visited the Matterhorn in 1907 and made several preparatory drawings and sketches of the mountain, from which he produced works in oil and gouache. Many of these paintings were made into chromolithographs. The present work painted in gouache, magnificently captures the atmospheric effects of the Alpine winter on this, probably the most splendid of the Swiss mountains.
