1978 Fiat 124 Spider
Registration no. XLJ 950S
Chassis no. 124CS10130176
First introduced in 1966 and based on shortened 124 saloon floorpan and running gear, the attractive Pininfarina-styled Spider would prove an outstanding success for FIAT, over 200,000 being sold before production ended in 1982. Launched with a 1,438cc, four-cylinder, twin-cam engine, the Spider gained 1.6-litre, 1.8-litre and, finally, 2-litre power units as the 1970s progressed. Four-wheel disc brakes were part of the package from the outset and all but a few home-market cars came with five-speed gearboxes.
A 1.8-litre, five-speed model, this FIAT 124 Spider was imported into the UK from California in the mid-1990s and treated to a full and thorough renovation. The work undertaken included conversion from left- to right-hand drive, a full bare-metal re-spray and complete engine and gearbox rebuild. The leather interior was renewed, while other new items fitted include the hood, carpets, wheels, brakes, suspension and stainless-steel exhaust system. Waxolyed at time of restoration, the vehicle we are advised has not seen a winter or rainy day in years and remains in A1 condition, having covered few miles since completion in the late 1990s. Surely one of the best FIAT 124 Spiders in the UK, XLJ 950S is finished in red with cream interior and offered with restoration invoices, MoT to October 2006 and Swansea V5.
