Lot Details
c.1920 Norton 498cc Model 16
Registration no. CX 5035
Frame no. 1036
Engine no. BA2499
Early Nortons, like so many other pioneers in the motorcycle industry, initially featured proprietary engines. Their own 1907 long stroke, side valve engine displaced 633cc and the new model was known as the ‘Big 4’. Smaller capacity engines followed and in 1911 the 3 1/2hp Model adopted the classic Norton 79 x 100mm bore and stroke dimensions. The model was to be continually updated, taking its final bow in 1954. Although documentation records first registration in 1922, it is believed to date from 1920 or perhaps earlier. It was bought new in the West Riding of Yorkshire by one George Dyson who kept the machine until the 1960’s and in 1968 it passed into the present family ownership. For many years it has been on display in the Sewerby Hall Museum at Bridlington. It was running when laid up but will now require the usual careful recommissioning. This highly original machine, which has been in Yorkshire all its life, is equipped with acetylene front and rear lamps and generator, leather panniers, a nickel horn and a hand-operated tyre pump. It comes with old style green log book and Swansea V5 registration document.
