Footnotes

  • Owned by William Milburn & Co. of London, the full-rigged 'Taunton' was built for the company’s Far Eastern trade by Denton, Gray & Co. at Hartlepool and launched in 1868. Wooden-planked over an iron frame, she was registered at 705 tons gross (688 net) and measured 181½ feet in length with a 32 foot beam. Under her first master Captain J. Hogg, she traded out of the Thames to China, a route she followed for much of her career. Sold to G.H. Meager of Swansea around 1880, at which time she was re-rigged as a barque to save on crewing costs, she continued in service until the mid-1890s when she disappears from record.
