A Haida argillite ship pipe
Elaborately carved in one piece, a figure in waistcoat leaning across the diminutive bowsprit, both hands grasping a ring bisecting his body at neck and knee, a similarly attired figure crouched directly behind clasping the emerging hoop, a row of wave-forms or reversed billetheads at their feet, the central cabin structure with delicately pierced framed windows, the sharply-peaked roof bound by a horizontal yoke-like element, thick beams supporting the ends, flanked by tall leafy foliage with berry clusters, possibly depicting tobacco plants, a female figure braced between a stern pole or tiller and the aft plant, the top drilled with narrow vertical hole as the pipe "bowl", met by a horizontal shaft from the stern.

Footnotes

  • For an analysis of the stylistic characteristics that distinguish ship pipes from other types of argillite pipes, see Wright, Robin K. "Haida Argillite Ship Pipes", AMERICAN INDIAN ART MAGAZINE, Vol.5 No.1, Winter 1979, pp. 40-47. "Ship pipes perhaps display the most interesting evolution in style, becoming so abstract in their later forms as to obscure their origin as representations of Euro-American sailing ships and their crews."
