Sir Nigel Gresley Kt. CBE. MI MechE. (1876-1941) was the Chief Mechanical Engineer of the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) from 1923-1941. He is famous as the designer of the locomotive known as Number 4468 Mallard for the London and North Eastern Railway, built in the 1930's by LNER in Doncaster, England. It was designed as an express locomotive and set a world record of 126mph on 3rd July 1938, breaking the previous record of 124 mph. set by the Germans in 1936.
Sir Nigel, a very keen shot, was also an avid wildfowl breeder and kept many species of duck at his various homes. He gave his locomotives the names of wildfowl and in so doing linked his two passions - wildfowl and locomotives. He was schooled at Marlborough College, before becoming an apprentice at Crewe Railway Works. After a distinguished life Gresley was knighted in 1936 and died in office on 5th April 1941
