A gold and crystal HMY "Britannia" cravat ring
18ct gold ring with oval crystal, backed by a mother of pearl disc, painted with the Prince of Wales feathers on a blue/red flag, the racing burgee of HMY "Britannia". Makers mark for "R.N" and hallmarked Sheffield 1894. Together with a mounted black and white photograph of King George V and the Czar Alexander, the King wearing a similar "Britannia" cravat ring. (2)

  • There can be no doubt that "Britannia", the first class cutter yacht GL Watson designed for HRH Edward, the Prince of Wales, in 1893 was his most successful and enduring work. This cravat clip, dating from just after the launch of the yacht, was one of Watson's most prize possessions and he can clearly be seen wearing it in his fine portrait by Sir James Guthrie and the photo portraits of the time. Circulated to a limited number of special people, King George V, seen in the photograph in "Cowes rig" and Royal Yacht Squadron cap, taken at Barton Manor by the Czarina, may well be wearing the clip which had belonged to his late father.
