Sold for £1,920 inc. premium

Footnotes

  • The seals carry the armorial insignia of Hope, Weir, Vere, Boyle and Hay; marshalled in several different ways. The seals were probably made for family members and descendants of Charles Hope, 2nd son of Charles Hope (1681-1742), first Earl of Hopetoun.

Charles Hope (1710-1791) of Craigiehall, Linlithgowshire married three times. The first was in 1733, to Catherine, daughter and heiress of Sir William Weir, Bt of Lanarkshire. She died in 1743. Charles Hope adopted the name Hope-Vere although his eldest son William is recorded as Hope-Weir.

His eldest grandson, James Hope-Vere of Blackwood and Craigiehall married, in 1785, Lady Elizabeth Hay. Their eldest son, William Edward Hope-Vere served as Brigadier-General of the Royal Company of Archers of the Queen's bodyguard in Scotland. In 1857, he married Lady Mary Emily Boyle.
