Footnotes

  • Xavier owned a hair salon in New York, and in 1976 commissioned Helmut Newton, via his agent Bob Fischer, to do a day-long shoot with the models Winnie and Patti Hansen. In the following year Patti would pose for one of Newton's most famous shots, 'Patti Hansen over Manhattan'. Newton produced three prints from the photoshoot, stamped with his copyright, but the negatives were ultimately retained by Xavier, who had several very large prints made to furnish his salon. From model releases to negatives, contact sheets to prints, invoices to correspondence, this archive charts the progress of a photoshoot by one of the 20th century's finest photographers.
