Circa 1550
Of tapering two-stage form cast with a central moulding and with a band of acanthus in relief behind the turned flared muzzle, the chase cast and chased in relief at the top with three devices of Henry II, King of France (1547-1559) and of Catherine de Medici (whom he married in 1533) or of Henry and his mistress, Diane de Poitiers (1499-1566), and with a central band of six foliated 'H's, all against a ground of fleur-de-lys, the reinforce with the badge of a crescent moon between bows with broken bow-strings, surmounted by a crowned foliated 'H', the former above the letter 'B', its bottom loop encircling the touch-hole (hinged cover missing), the base-ring incised with later numerals, the 'VOC' mark of the Dutch East India Company between, the letter 'M' above, plain trunnions, and turned spool-shaped cascabel pierced with a horizontal circular hole (light green patination overall): on modern stepped wooden carriage of naval type with wooden trucks

    The crescent moon and bows, both emblems of Diana, Goddess of the Hunt was said by a contemporary writer Paolo Giovio (Dialogo dell'Imprese Militari et Amorose, Lyons, 1559, p. 25) to have been adopted by the King when he became Dauphin in 1536, and was used by him on the bindings of his books. Queen Catherine also used them on her bookbinding, clothing and jewellery. See H.L. Blackmore, The Armouries of the Tower of London, I Ordnance, 1976, pp. 114-5
