A fine Builder's Model of the Cargo Steamship "Portfield" 1919,
hull of solid timber, painted black to the waterline and buff below, with a four blade brass propeller, bilge keels, painted draft mars at bow and stern and Plimsol Line amidships. Painted decks with inscribed plank lines and hatch covers. Finely detailed black metal and nickel silver fittings including: anchors and cable, windlass, cargo derricks and winches, ventilators, binnacle and telegraphs, exposed steering quadrant, rods and cable, guardrails and stanchions. Details include gratings, navigation lamps, fire buckets and ship's boats on davits. Mounted on metal pillars in a polished display case bearing a pair of ivorine Builder's plaques for Craig, Taylor & Co., Stockton on Tees. On a custom made table stand. Also included is the ship's original house flag for WE Hinde & Co., Cardiff and the decorated champagne bottle wrapper used at her launching. 88x58x19in(224x147x48cm)

Footnotes

  • The SS Portfield was launched in 1919 for the Cardiff Shipowners W.E.Hinde & Co. She was sold to the French Chargeurs Reunis of Havre in 1929 and renamed SS Fort Lamy, with whom she remained until seized by the British in 1940 during WW2. Operated by J Cory as SS War Peacock, she was torpedoed and sunk in mid Atlantic by U527 on 8 March 1943.
