Footnotes

  • Provenance:
The collection of the late Peter Cochrane.
Formerly exhibited at Kasmin Limited, London. Acquired 19th March 1969, according to a note written on the reverse.

Raja Jai Singh as a handsome young ruler turned to the Nawab of Lahore for Mughal help during a revolt in Kulu around 1740. During his visit to Lahore he caught the eye of the Nawab's daughter. Somewhat alarmed, he fled to a Rama shrine, devoting the rest of his life to religious worship. His brother, Raja Tedhi Singh, (r. 1742-67), succeeded to the Kulu throne. Some Kulu land was taken by Raja Shamsher Sen of Mandi (r. 1727-81) during Jai Singh's absence.

    For other portraits of Jai Singh, see W. G. Archer, Indian Paintings from the Punjab Hills, London 1973, vol. I, p. 321, vol. II, p. 5, fig. 9, p. 6, figs. 10 and 11, p. 177, fig. 22.
