Krishen Khanna (India, b. 1925) The Black Buffalo in Green Water
oil on board, thumb-impression of the artist bottom right 23.5 x 30 cm.
Provenance: Private UK collection. Given to the current owner by the artist in 1977.
His own account of its acquisition runs: 'Krishen Khanna was a personal friend whose brother, Sarvi, was my colleague and Marketing Director of the Vazir Sultan Tobacco Company in Hyderabad, Deccan. When I retired from India Krishen did this painting for me in exchange for a wooden carved door from Northern Nigeria, where I worked before going to India. Krishen brought the painting to Hyderabad to my farewell party and in an alcoholic dash to the airport to return to Delhi, I suggested jokingly that as he had not signed the painting, he quickly put his thumb impression in red (the only paint readily at hand in the house) in the right-hand corner - which he did. Krishen gave his brother the original painting of the buffalo on a large canvas, which he had always admired - done in 1975.'
