JAMES, HENRY (1843-1916, novelist, O.M.)
PORTRAIT AFTER JOHN SINGER SARGENT R.A., R.P. (1856-1925),
photograph, silver print, of the celebrated portrait by John Singer Sargent, half-length, signed on the mount by both Henry James and John Singer Sargent, 16 x 12½ in (40.6 x 31.8 cm).

Footnotes

  • The original portrait, initially the idea of Edith Wharton, was commissioned by a group of James's English friends to celebrate his seventieth birthday. James was delighted with the outcome of the ten sittings to his close friend and fellow American, Sargent: '...nothing less, evidently, than a very fine thing indeed, Sargent at his very best and poor old H.J. not at his worst; in short a living breathing likeness and a masterpiece of painting. I am really quite ashamed to admire it so much and so loudly...I can't help being proud of my so limited connection with it, I take comfort at any rate in feeling that I should find it exactly as fine and interesting...if I were wholly unconnected with either of the gentlemen concerned...'

It has been said that to sit for Sargent was 'for James to face Art's nearest counterpart to himself' (Carter Ratcliffe, John Singer Sargent, 1982). The original painting is now in the National Portrait Gallery, the gift of Henry James. For a portrait of Sargent see lot 213.
