Holloway was only nineteen or twenty years of age when he made the pencil drawing for this portrait of Eliot at his desk at Faber and Faber. He recalled on one occasion: ‘I don’t think I had any difficulty with the drawing – Eliot was a very good sitter – he kept still.’ Elsewhere he wrote: ‘He told me how different it was sitting for a drawing to William Rothenstein, who was standing up and dodging about and even measuring his skull with a pair of callipers. Eliot was fairly quiet - I think I was a bit overawed.' Dr Bukhari has a high opinion of its quality as a portrait and an etching.

Holloway was particularly interested in portraiture, including self-portraits (see Holloway, lot 189), with a leaning towards the ‘creative encounter‘- he made etchings of Herbert Read, Spender, Lumsden and Alec Buckels. He was entirely self-taught. An example of this etching of 1932, which is believed to be the only one of Eliot, is in the National Portrait Gallery.
