- Barrie at first resisted being photographed: 'Please don't think me a curmudgeon. The pictures are very fine...for myself I am all done with all these glories and have retired permanently from view.' A contemporary reviewer of Men of Mark observed: 'The Barrie...is a beautiful thing. Sombre, resigned, baffled yet upheld by a dour Scotch submissiveness, it is one of the saddest, finest pictures in the book.' See note on Coburn at the end of the catalogue.
