Lot Details
BARRIE, SIR JAMES MATTHEW, (1860-1937, playwright and novelist, O.M.)
PORTRAIT BY ALVIN LANGDON COBURN (1882-1966),
photogravure print, proof before letters (no printed plate number or facsimile signature), head and shoulders, 'J.M. Barrie' written in pencil on the mount by Coburn, tipped onto a mount different from the printed version (12½ x 9½ in.), extremely fine, a few small very light fox marks on mount, 9½ x 7 in. (24.1 x 17.8 cm.), taken for 'Men of Mark', Adelphi Terrace, 18 October 1909.

Footnotes

  • Barrie at first resisted being photographed: 'Please don't think me a curmudgeon. The pictures are very fine...for myself I am all done with all these glories and have retired permanently from view.' A contemporary reviewer of Men of Mark observed: 'The Barrie...is a beautiful thing. Sombre, resigned, baffled yet upheld by a dour Scotch submissiveness, it is one of the saddest, finest pictures in the book.' See note on Coburn at the end of the catalogue.
