Footnotes

  • Portraits of George Eliot are rare - she especially disliked photographs and sought to suppress any. The first sitting for the original chalk drawing of this portrait by Burton, an old friend, was on 29 June 1864. In August she wrote that her partner George Lewes first saw it in August 'and was in raptures with it whereupon Mr Burton told him it was his (George's). I don't know myself whether it is good or not.' The original hung over the mantelpiece in Lewes's study. The Rajon etching, of which this is a separately issued print, was used as the frontispiece for the first volume of George Eliot's Life. Both the Burton original and an example of this etching are in the National Portrait Gallery.
