Footnotes

  • REFERENCE: Zdzislaw Najder, Joseph Conrad, 1983.

The sitting for this portrait took place on 6 January 1924. Tittle recorded that: 'Conrad was very gay and happy at the diversion of the studio, and he was constantly jumping up to look over my shoulder to see the progress of the work which fascinated him greatly.' Conrad was to die at his home in the Kentish village of Bishopsbourne, on 3 August 1924. This is Tittle’s finest work and one of the best portraits of Conrad. An example is in the National Portrait Gallery.
