Lot Details
SHANNON, CHARLES HASELWOOD (1863-1937, painter, illustrator, wood-engraver, lithographer, co-founder of the Vale Press and of The Dial, connoisseur and collector, companion of Charles Ricketts; R.A., A.R.E.)
PORTRAIT BY ALVIN LANGDON COBURN (1882-1966),
photogravure print, proof before letters (no printed plate number or facsimile signature), head and shoulders, in profile turned to the left, 'Charles Shannon' written in pencil on the mount by Coburn, tipped onto a mount different from the printed edition (12½ x 9½ in), one small faint fox mark on mount, 9¾ x 8¾ in (24.8 x 22.2 cm), taken for 'Men of Mark', Holland Park, 5 February 1907.

Footnotes

  • Coburn admired Shannon's paintings and lithographs before he 'saw his finely chiselled profile at a reception...Later, in his large studio, flooded with light and filled with the choice things of art, his own and others, a Grecian torso I remember, and rare examples of Oriental art, I went to see him, and it was here amid such fitting surroundings that I made my photograph. Some men seem to know instinctively how to construct just the right sort of background for themselves, and this is more important for an artist, perhaps than for most people, but everyone does it to a greater extent, consciously or unconsciously.'

See note on Coburn at the end of the catalogue.
