SARGENT, JOHN SINGER (1856-1925, painter, R.A., R.P.)
PORTRAIT BY ALVIN LANGDON COBURN (1882-1966),
photogravure print, proof before letters (no printed plate number or facsimile signature), head and shoulders, looking into the camera, ’John S. Sargent’ written in pencil on the mount by Coburn, tipped onto a mount different from the printed version (12½ x 9½ in), extremely fine, 9½ x 7 in (24.2 x 17.8 cm). taken for 'Men of Mark', Chelsea, 12 January 1907.

Footnotes

  • Introduced by Henry James with 'a very charming epistle’, Coburn photographed Sargent in his studio. He later wrote: 'I found Mr Sargent most friendly and willing to help me in every way to get my result. A portrait by photography needs more elaboration between the sitter and the artist than a painted portrait, and Mr Sargent having had some experience in portraits himself realised this.' A reviewer of Men of Mark noted the similarities between Coburn's portrait of Sargent and the artist's own work and character: 'Mr Sargent...he gives in a strong, sunny, even light, indicative of his art and the head is shown large, so that the extraordinary scrutiny of his magisterial eyes and the robust outdoor colour of his face get their full value.'

See note on Coburn at the end of the catalogue.
