Footnotes

  • REFERENCE: Wright 66 recording an edition of 111 impressions in the final state of three.

This 1930 portrait of Rushbury was described in the catalogue of the retrospective exhibition of his work at New Orleans in 1991 as 'the most important male portrait by Brockhurst'.

Brockhurst was born in Birmingham, the son of a coal merchant. At the Birmingham Municipal School of Art he conceived an admiration for the linear precision of the panel painters of the Italian Renaissance. He became the favourite of film stars and high society and lived in Manhattan and New Jersey until his death. He and Rushbury were friends from their Birmingham days. Brockhurst thought that the three greatest artists of the twentieth century were Augustus John, Salvador Dalí and himself.
