Footnotes

  • James McBey is widely recognised as one of the finest British etchers of the last century. His story as the illegitimate son of an Aberdeenshire farmer and a dozen years working in a bank before becoming an entirely self-taught artist, printing his first works on his mother's mangle, is movingly related in his autobiography.
