PORTRAIT BY ALVIN LANGDON COBURN (1882-1966),
photogravure print, proof before letters (no printed plate number or facsimile signature), three-quarter length, facing the camera, leaning on a ladder with his palette in his hand, 'Henri Matisse' written in pencil on the mount by Coburn, tipped onto a mount different from the printed version (12½ x 9½ in), extremely fine, some small light fox marks to mount, 91/2 x 71/2 in (24.1 x 19 cm), taken for 'Men of Mark', Paris, 13 May 1913.

Footnotes

  • Coburn met Matisse through Gertrude Stein. He was the last person to be photographed for Men of Mark. Coburn had admired a painting by Matisse at the Second Impressionist Exhibition in London but it was marked "Not for Sale". Coburn found the same painting of a bather on the beach by a tree in Matisse’s Studio and persuaded the artist to sell it to him. He noted that he 'was glad to include the portrait of so able and interesting an artist' in Men of Mark.

See note on Coburn at the end of the catalogue.
