Footnotes

  • For photographs of Lowry, see Allen Andrews, The Life of L.S. Lowry, 1977; there appear to be very few painted portraits of him. The National Portrait Gallery has an early painted portrait, a pencil drawing and a bust, otherwise its holdings are of photographs. Lowry's painting developed in parallel to forty years of working life in Manchester and Salford as a rent-collector and chief cashier.

Lincoln Jenkins, born in Presteigne, was Principal at the Horrowgate School of Art from 1939 to 1961. He was strongly influenced by Cubism.
