Footnotes

  • Robin Gibson of the National Portrait Gallery noted that Bratby 'almost certainly painted more portraits than any other living painter...like Beckman and Kokoschka before him Bratby produced a more or less unbroken stream of self-portraits from his student days onwards. While claiming as others have done that this is because he is his own most available model, the self-portraits do betray at times an almost obsessive search for self-identity and mirror the fortunes and misfortunes of his personal life in a highly autobiographical way' (Robin Gibson, John Bratby Portraits, 1991).
