Footnotes

  • This photograph was taken at the first sitting Coburn had with Brangwyn at the latter's studio in Hammersmith - in it he is holding an old Chinese cup. Coburn joined Brangwyn's painting class shortly after photographing him and there learned about composition, colouring and the Orient. It is thought that Brangwyn's etchings and his practice of printing at his own press inspired Coburn's work with photogravures. Similarities between their work have long been noticed by critics.

Brangwyn was born in Bruges. He designed for William Morris and was involved in the Arts and Crafts and Art Nouveau movements. 'At the height of his career Brangwyn was far and away the most famous of all British artists - the first to achieve worldwide recognition in his own lifetime.' He was a man of immense versatility: painter, magazine illustrator, mural painter, designer of interiors, furniture, fabric, ceramics, and book plates, etcher and lithographer.

See note on Coburn at the end of the catalogue.
