Bartolozzi came to England in 1764 and was a founder member of the Royal Academy. Reynolds once praised Bartolozzi's skill in engraving one of his portraits: 'The hands in my picture are very slight, but here they are beautifully drawn and finished, Mr. Bartolozzi having made them what they really ought to be.' The original portrait for this mezzotint was probably painted in 1773.
