Footnotes

  • This is probably the portrait of Stephens by Peake, novelist, painter and poet, that was reproduced in the London Mercury, May 1938, vol. 38, no. 223, facing p. 240. Peake made a number of portraits for this publication.

In her memoir of her husband, A World Away, 1970, Maeve Gilmore recalls that: 'Once we met James Stephens, the Irish poet, like a little leprechaun, curly haired and lively, witty and from a world of fairies, and we all went to Lyons in Leicester Squre...he did a strange little drawing which he called "Portrait of many Mervyn Peakes by his friend James Stephens. Given at this Court of Lyons Dive 1938."'

For a portrait of Mervyn Peake see lot 117.
