Footnotes

  • Perhaps the most famous photograph of George Sand by Nadar, taken in c.1865, and printed by Goupil et Cie for the Galerie Contemporaine.

Nadar's first contact with George Sand was in 1853 when he asked her to sit for a portrait to be included in his Pantheon. He dedicated to her his first collection of stories, Quand j'étais étudiant, and she returned the compliment with an introduction to his Droit au vol. He took several photographs of her in 1860s and they became close friends, with him revering her as a mentor.
