Footnotes

  • An example of this photograph, from Men and Women of the Day, is in the National Portrait Gallery.

This photograph was taken in May-June 1885. In terms of technique Ruskin was pleased with Barraud's images and thought that they expressed 'what good character there was in me for my works' but he was less than pleased with himself as the subject: 'They've been doing photographs of me again and I'm an orang-outang as usual, and am in despair. I thought with my beard I was beginning to be just the least bit nice to look at. I would give half my books for a new profile.' The photograph was engraved to illustrate Collingwood's John Ruskin, a biographical outline. (James Dearden, John Ruskin, a Life in Pictures, 1999). See the note on Barraud at the end of the catalogue.
