- Coburn recorded about this image: 'I could not seem to express "Max" as a head, as is my usual custom. I seemed to need more of him: the pose of his figure impressed me as being so characteristic.' Rothenstein had evidently found the same to be true. See note on Coburn at the end of the catalogue.
