photogravure print, proof before letters (no printed plate number or facsimile signature), full-length, 'Max Beerbohm' written in pencil on the mount by Coburn, right hand on his hip, left hand on a door handle, tipped onto a mount different from the printed version (12½ x 9½ in), extremely fine, one small fox mark on mount, 9½ x 7½ in (24.2 x 19 cm), taken from 'Men of Mark', in London on 15 January 1908.

  • Coburn recorded about this image: 'I could not seem to express "Max" as a head, as is my usual custom. I seemed to need more of him: the pose of his figure impressed me as being so characteristic.' Rothenstein had evidently found the same to be true. See note on Coburn at the end of the catalogue.
