Russian Ammonite Pair
Russian Ammonite Pair
Simbirskites versicolor
Cretaceous
Hauterivian Stage
Wolga, Russia

Two halves of a large Russian ammonite display glittering pyrite and attractive yellow calcite in the inner chambers—phragmocones—which originally contained air to aid in the living creature’s buoyancy. The outer chamber, in which the animal itself lived, contrasts dramatically with rich black coloration. The sizable pair is highly decorative.
