  • Craig Bates' notes indicate: "The basket is finely and neatly produced, among some of Tina Charlie's finest work. The stitching on the base is slightly larger than that on the body of the basket; the stitches there are about 22 stitches per inch, and about seven coils per vertical inch. The basket appears in a 1926 Yosemite Indian Field Days photograph with Tina Charlie and Governor Friend Richardson." Ella Cain's tag reads: "No.13D, Paiute Indian Mourning Basket. Made by Tillie Young Charlie when her son was called to war. Design - clouds, lightning and thunder. Took 2nd prize at Yosemite Indian Field Day - 1920." The photograph referenced in Bates' book "Tradition and Innovation - A Basket History of the Indians of the Yosemite-Mono Lake Area", page 103, illustration 199.
