Papunya area, Western Desert, the thick implement of bowed ovoid form, front and back marked by parallel line incisions running the entire length, rows of white dots added as decoration on the front, with an in-cut handle on the reverse, ochre pigment throughout.

  • Collected at Papunya in the mid 1970’s. The artist is unknown, but such shields were painted by the most senior artists of that area, a small group whose work came to form the Western Desert art movement that inspired the well-known contemporary dot painting style.
