Impressive Sea Lily Colony
Scyphocrinus elegans
Silurian and Devonian
Tafilalet, Southern Morocco
One of the largest crinoid colony plaques to be made available in many years, a magnificent natural death assemblage displays numerous well-preserved specimens. The fossilization of the colony was precipitated by a geological catastrophe, such as an undersea volcanic eruption or landslide, approximately 450 million years ago. Commonly called sea lilies, these filter feeders were actually animals that fed upon plankton.
