Discovered in Argentina in 1951 by a farmer digging a livestock pond, many collectors believe Esquel to be the finest example of all stony-iron pallasites. Displaying the only gemstone from outer space, the beautiful green mineral present in pallasites is identical structurally and chemically to Earths peridot. Pallasites are believed to originate from the core-mantle boundary of planetary bodies, with the iron content from the core and the olivine crystals from the mantle. Some of the crystals in this specimen are fine enough to be of facet grade; they are considered the most unshocked of any pallasite known. To our knowledge, this is the largest slice of an Esquel meteorite ever offered at public auction.
