Original pen and watercolor sketch on paper, 6 3/4 by 4 1/4 inches, of a stampede in Montezuma Canyon, signed at lower right ("W.H.J. Aug 31-1875"), with inscription by Jackson on verso, leaf toned, loss at upper left corner, matted and framed to 31 by 17 1/4 inches in double sided frame.
Jackson was a Civil War veteran and photographer's assistant who decided to take Horace Greeley's advice and go west. He traversed the Oregon Trail, painting and photographing along the way. On the verso he describes the scene: "Montezuma Canyon Aug. 31. 1875 / While prospecting we were met by a party of 15 or 20 Indians and escorted into their camps by forcing us all into a stampede--In the center in the lead is the pack mule with the photographic outfit."
