Encouraged by the coupé’s success, Aston Martin introduced a convertible version of the V8 Vantage Zagato at the Geneva Salon in March 1987. Apart from the lack of a fixed roof, the major external change from the coupé was a new dummy radiator grille and ‘eyelids’ that covered the headlamps when they were not in use. Intended only for the fuel-injected 320bhp engine, unless, of course, a customer specified an engine in Vantage tune, the Zagato Volante performed similarly to the ‘ordinary’ V8 Volante, with a claimed top speed of 160mph and a 0-60mph time of 5.5 seconds. The Volante was intended to be even more exclusive than its closed cousin and by the time production ceased in 1990 a total of 37 had been built - 25 right-hand drive; 12 left-hand drive. Around £70,000 at time of launch, the Zagato’s price had risen to £125,000 at the finish.
Zagato Volante right-hand drive chassis number ‘30019’ was despatched from the Newport Pagnell factory on 5th April 1989 and delivered new via Marshals of Cambridge to its first owner, a Mr Stevens. On 25th June 1989 the car, which had covered just 500 miles, was advertised in the Sunday Times motoring section for sale at £500,000! Having enjoyed ownership as part of his private collection, the vendor feels that it is time for this outstanding vehicle to be passed on to a new owner who has more time to savour the joys of driving what it still one of the fastest and rarest of convertibles. Three registered keepers are recorded for ‘30019’, which has covered a mere 6,500 miles from new. A manual transmission model finished in Gladiator Red with magnolia leather interior and black hood, the car is presented in excellent condition in every respect and offered with fresh MoT and Swansea V5.
