In June 1978 the Volante development of the V8 saloon was announced. “It’s not by any means the world’s most expensive drophead in production (the Corniche costs an extra £23,000) nor is it quite the quickest, though a Porsche Cabrio would have to be very well driven to get away from it, but the Aston Martin Volante is perhaps the greatest. It is a true sportscar which is also luxuriously comfortable.” - Fast Lane.

The Aston Martin V8 survived the changes of ownership and financial upheavals of the 1970s, appearing in countless variants, one of the more exclusive being the Volante convertible. Introduced in response to customers’ demands for such a car, the Volante first appeared in June 1978. Its sale to the lucrative North American market was assured and the entire production of an average of three cars per week went to the USA until early in 1981 when the model was made available for the UK and European markets.

Arguably the ultimate in soft-top luxury, the Volante boasted a lined, power-operated hood which, when erected, endowed the walnut embellished interior with all the solidity and refinement associated with the saloon version. Performance was similar to that of the V8 saloon with Motor magazine reporting a healthy 0-60 time of 7.7 seconds and a top speed of 150mph in their road test in March 1979. Although its open-car aerodynamics meant that top speed suffered with the hood down, the Volante’s 150mph maximum nevertheless ranked it among the world’s fastest convertibles.

As the V8 Saloon was modified so the Volante received the same upgrades to engine, body and wheels including Weber/Marelli fuel injection in 1986. Production ceased in tandem with the V8 Saloons in December 1989 after a total of 849 cars had been made. This Aston Martin V8 Volante was first registered ‘G903 CPL’ in 1990, serviced by Aston Martin Works Service at Newport Pagnell in September 1999 at 321 miles and subsequently by Sargeants of Goudhurst. At time of cataloguing the odometer reading was 795 miles. As befits this archetypical Grand Routier, the Volante is offered with bespoke Aston Martin luggage as illustrated.
