1934 Rolls-Royce 20/25hp Drophead Coupe
Coachwork by Southern Motor Company

Registration no. AWM 401
Chassis no. GWE26
Engine no. F8P
The introduction of a smaller Rolls-Royce, the 20hp, in 1922 enabled the company to cater for the increasingly important owner-driver market that appreciated the quality of Rolls-Royce engineering but did not need a car as large as a 40/50hp Ghost or Phantom. The ‘Twenty’ proved eminently suited to town use, yet could cope admirably with Continental touring when called upon. Its successor, the 20/25hp, introduced in 1929, updated the concept with significant improvements, featuring an enlarged (from 3.1 to 3.7 litres) and more-powerful version of the Twenty’s six-cylinder overhead-valve engine. Produced contemporaneously with the Phantom II, the 20/25 benefited from many of the features, such as synchromesh gears and centralised chassis lubrication, developed for the larger model, and would become the best-selling Rolls-Royce of the inter-war period.
Chassis number ‘GWE26’ wears three-position drophead coupé coachwork by Southern Motor Company, of South London, a firm that offered replacement bodies for Rolls-Royces in the late 1930s. Lacking any coachbuilding facilities of its own, Southern sub-contracted the work to Coachcraft and Ranalah. Accompanying (copy) factory documents indicate that ‘GWE26’ was originally bodied as a standard limousine by Thrupp & Maberly, its first owner being one H H Timberlake, of Wigan, followed by H Travis, of Southport. The car underwent complete restoration between 1989 and 1992, including an engine overhaul, and has seen very little use since apart from occasional wedding-car duty for the owner’s friends. Fewer than 2,000 miles have been covered since completion, and the car is presented in good condition throughout, though it is reported that there is a slight whine when in first gear. (A replacement pre-owned gearbox is available). Finished in two-tone blue with black leather interior, the vehicle is offered with owner’s handbook, expired MoTs from 1989-1992, Swansea V5 registration document and current road fund licence/MoT.
