CHARLOTTE SOPHIA (Queen of George III)
Autograph letter signed (“Your very affectionate Mother & Sincere Friend Charlotte”), to her daughter-in-law, Frederica, Duchess of York, congratulating her on the Duke of York’s success and safety (“...the Essential thing for both Yours & my happiness, God grant that He may be enabled to succeed in every undertaking as well as in this...”), expressing the wish that the good news will help her recover her health, promising to call on her at Oatlands to persuade her to come to spend a few days “with Us” when “it will be my utmost wish, & it shall not fail of my endeavours to make Yr Sejour with us as easy & as pleasant as possible, in such a manner as to induce You to repeat Yr Visits often at least I do assure You it never can be to often for me”, and reporting that the King and Princesses, even Amelia, are in good health, though the latter has had a recent return of her old complaint; she ends on the note: “The K[in]g sends word that the Carriages are ready I must therefore stop here...”, 2 pages, 4to, no place or date

Footnotes

  • Princess Frederica Catherina Ulrica Catherina (1767-1820), eldest daughter of the King of Prussia, married Prince Frederick Augustus, Duke of York, George, III’s second and favourite son, in 1791. There were no children of the marriage, and couple soon separated. The Duchess retired to Oatlands Park: “a modest, self-effacing woman, she cared little for London society, preferring the company of her pet dogs, and attending church every Sunday” (ODNB). The present letter presumably dates from the earliest years of their marriage when the ‘Grand Old Duke of York’ was commander of the British army in Flanders.
