BURGES (WILLIAM)
Autograph letter signed (“W Burges”), to Miss E. Seddon, sending her three books, two of which are made up of cuttings from The Builder and which he asks her to return as he will need them for his forthcoming lectures at the Society of Arts, the other being [Gilbert] Scott’s Westminster [Abbey] which he asks her to accept as a gift (“...I have even ventured to write your name of the fly leaf which I should not have done had not the work contained a very considerable portion of my writing – & I believe in such cases it is a conceded privilege to the author to do so...’, 2 pages, 8vo, integral blank, 15 Buckingham Street, Strand, 18 January 1864

Footnotes

  • Letters by Burges – now recognised as one the greatest of nineteenth-century architect designers – are rare: “Most of Burges’s letters have vanished” (J. Mordaunt Crook, William Burges and the High Victorian Dream, 1981, p.53); none are recorded in American Book Prices Current as having appeared at auction. Burges’s correspondent may well have been a member of distinguished family of cabinet makers, which included the Gothic revivalist architect J.P. Seddon and the Pre-Raphaelite painter Thomas Seddon.
