The Young Sportsman's Instructor in Angling, Fowling, Hawking, Hunting, Ordering Singing Birds, Hawks, Poultry, Coneys, Hares and Dogs and how to Cure them, woodcut frontispiece of an angler (with small hole in blank margin), a little light browning, later diced calf, gilt-tooled borders on sides, neatly rebacked preserving original gilt panelled spine, g.e., preserved in morocco-backed solander box [Westwood & Satchell, p.146-7; Schwerdt II, 13; Poynter *1.1], 48mo (59 x 40mm.), sold at the Gold Ring in Little Britain, [c.1705]

Footnotes

  • "Exceedingly rare but not unique as stated in the sale catalogue of the Huth Library" (Schwerdt). There is some doubt over the exact date of publication, but it certainly predates The Young Sportsman's Delight and Instructor of 1712, which contains an advertisement for the present work. The angling section comprises some 80 of the 140 pages and is based on the advice contained in some of Markham's earlier general works.
